In today’s fast-paced world, anxiety disorders have a far-reaching impact on society, with profound implications on both mental and physical health. As a response, there is growing interest in manual therapy modalities, with emerging research suggesting their potential to alleviate related symptoms.

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. While stress and anxious feelings are a common response to a situation where we feel under pressure, they usually pass once the stressful situation has passed, or ‘stressor’ is removed. Anxiety is when these anxious feelings don’t go away – when they’re ongoing and happen without any particular reason or cause.

The Power of Touch

A systematic review of manual therapy modalities for addressing anxiety symptoms was conducted. The review included a variety of manual therapy modalities such as massage therapy, osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), foot reflexology, acupressure, manual therapy, healing touch, therapeutic touch, and gentle touch.

The review found that a significant number of studies demonstrated statistical significance in favor of manual therapy modalities as an anxiety treatment. The positive results for the aforementioned manual therapies on anxiety symptom improvement are shown: 83% for massage therapy, 33% for OMT, 100% for foot reflexology, 100% for acupressure, 100% for manual therapy, 0% for healing touch, 100% for therapeutic touch, and 100% for gentle touch.

Massage Therapy and Anxiety

Massage therapy, in particular, has been shown to be highly effective in reducing anxiety. A systematic review found that massage therapy helps to reduce anxiety. The pressure and movement of massage therapy help to relieve pain, anxiety, and depression. Previous studies stated that massage has the potential to relieve muscle spasm, increase physical activity, promote relaxation, and relieve pain.

Another review found that single applications of massage therapy reduced state anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate. This suggests that even a single session of massage therapy can have profound effects on one’s mental state.

The evidence strongly suggests that massage therapy can be an effective tool in managing and reducing anxiety. It’s non-invasive, comforting, free of side effects, and greatly appreciated by recipients. So, whether you’re dealing with chronic anxiety or just the everyday stresses of life, consider incorporating massage therapy into your wellness routine. It’s not just about relaxation - it’s about your mental health.
